Player Ratings: Juventus 1–1 Catania

JUVENTUS

Manninger: 6.5- Did well deputizing for the injured Buffon and could not be faulted for the goal. The Austrian didn't have much to do in goal as he was ahrdly troubled.

De Ceglie: 6.5
- The youngster is a better fit than Molinaro and has a bright career ahead of him. Looked confident and in control at the back and should see some serious playing time this season. He was always on hand to deal with the danger when called upon.

Chiellini: 6.0- The Italian international was as solid as a rock at the back until he whiffed on Ledesma’s cross that gifted Catania the equaliser. He should have been more alert but was caught napping and that cost Juve the game.

Legrottaglie: 6.0- Missed a good chance to be the hero tonight as he ballooned his shot over the bar with three minutes left in the match. A good performance overall and his challenges were timed to perfection.

Grygera: 6.5- He had a quiet evening and did his work with minimal fuss. He created the odd chance down the right and his crossing was good.

Marchionni: 5.0- Lost possession much too easily and his crosses were not up to par. Will not be happy with his performance tonight.

Marchisio: 6.0- Never really found his rhythm in the first half but came to life in the second 45 minutes and was eventually substituted.

Giovinco: 7.0- Set up the first goal with a cross from his left foot and made a pest of himself all night long. The Diminutive starlet could have opened up his scoring account but missed a good chance in the 62 minute.

Poulsen: 6.0- Had a solid evening in the midfield trenches and should have won it for his team but Bizarri made a wondrous save from point blank range

Amauri: 7.5- He did a great job out-jumping two defenders and heading the ball past Bizarri. He is really on his game right now and is in scintillating form.

Del Piero: 7.0- Had four prime opportunities from free kicks on the edge of the area but did not deliver the goods on this particular night. Should have added his name to the score-sheet but he hit the bar in the 69th minute and was robbed by Bizarri in the 71st.

SUBS: Salihamidzic (69”) 6.0, Tiago (83”) NA, Nedved (84”) NA

CATANIA

Bizarri: 8.0- Could not be faulted for Amauri’s goal and made two world class saves on Del Piero and Poulsen in the second half. Catania would have lost the match without his heroics tonight.

Silvestre: 6.5- He had a decent match at the back and did not make any glaring mistakes

Sardo: 6.0- Had a tough time dealing with the physical play of Amauri and did not look convincing in the air

Terlizzi: 5.5- Was beaten badly on Amauri’s goal and did not look comfortable tonight.

Silvestri: 6.0- He missed a volley in the 5th minute from 12 yards but otherwise played well tonight.

Biagianti: 6.5- He had a good long range effort that was well saved by Manninger and a free kick that went just wide.

Ledesma: 7.0- He set up the goal with some good work on right flank and an excellent cross that gifted Plasmati an opportunity he did not miss.

Izco: 7.0- Was the most dangerous Catania player on the pitch and will be pleased with his performance.

Morimoto: 6.0- The Japanese youngster did not look out of place and ran himself off the pitch getting substituted in the 60th minute.

Llama: 6.5- He looked very comfortable on the ball and was having a decent match but was surprisingly substituted to start the second half.

SUBS: Plasmati (46”) 7.0, Martinez (60”) 5.0, Baiocco (84”)

Juve denied win by unbeatable Bizzarri

Just like last year. After Fiorentina, Juventus were unable to get the better of another team, Catania, who forced the third draw (always with the same 1-1 result) on the Bianconeri in the space of only nine months. This time they came back from behind. After Amauri opened the scoring and Plasmati equalized, the match had only one star: Bizzarri, who was decisive in stopping at least six clear goal-scoring chances, twice also with the help of the woodwork. This draw makes Juve lose the top position in the League. Ranieri's team are now fourth before Saturday's game at Sampdoria.

Ranieri changed things around again for his fourth match in 10 days. With Buffon and Camoranesi missing, alongside Trezeguet, Zebina and Zanetti, it was Molinaro, Mellberg and Sissoko's turn to rest. A very young side played, with De Ceglie, Marchisio and Giovinco all on together from the start. Manninger was in goal, and the Amauri-Del Piero partnership played up front.

Catania came to the Olimpico hoping to get another draw like last year. Zenga played a very defensive formation with only one striker up front, Morimoto. The Sicilians held out well for the first quarter of an hour, but on the first real chance the Bianconeri scored. Giovinco, cheered by the whole crowd from the start, put in a great cross from the left for Amauri to head in. This was the third consecutive League goal for the Brazilian.

Not much else happened in the first half. The Bianconeri tried to increase the lead, especially with runs on the left. Catania tried two long-range shots with Biagianti (saved by Manninger) and Llama (his shot went wide).

At the start of the second half, Zenga immediately put Plamsati on to strengthen the attack and, a few minutes later, Martinez too. But Juventus had the clearest chance when Amauri set up Giovinco alone in front of Bizzarri, who deflected the shot with his feet. From a possible 2-0 result, the score changed to 1-1 instead. Plasmati found himself in a perfect position to head in two yards from Manninger, who could do nothing.

Salihamidzic then came on and Juve began dominating in earnest. Giovinco was lively on the left and in the space of a few seconds both Del Piero and Amauri hit the crossbar. This signalled the start of a furious period of attacks, in which Bizzarri rose to become the star of the match, saving repeatedly on Del Piero, Amauri and Poulsen. Near the end, Tiago and Nedved came on (in place of Giovinco and Marchisio), while Baiocco replaced Martinez. Juve attacked until well into injury time, but the result didn't change. It seems 1-1 draws between the Bianconeri and Catania are in fashion lately.

Giovinco: «We’re happy about our performance, not so the result»

If it wasn't for Plasmati getting the equalizer for Catania, it would've been a memorable night for Sebastian Giovinco.

Playing his first League game of the season and at home, the young talent immediately showed he deserves all the attention he’s getting and the cheers from the fans. He displayed his class, like when he set up Amauri's goal, but also his great determination and the right amount of toughness, showing everybody that the boy has what it takes physically as well.

Here are his remarks after the game: «Fortunately I'd already played here when Juve were in Serie B, so I wasn't that nervous. We're sorry for how the game went. We're happy with our performance but not the result. The turf didn't help us, but we’re not looking for alibis, we created at least 10 goal-scoring chances, we were only unable to convert them. The chance I had? I didn't hit the ball right; I should've lifted it or put it in the middle».

*juventus.com

Amauri: «We're only at the beginning, we can only get better»

For a long stretch of the match, it looked like Amauri's third consecutive goal could bring the three points again. That would have made it nine points earned by the Brazilian in ten days. But alas Catania succeeded where Udinese and Cagliari had failed, and ruined the Bianconeri's celebrations.

The final draw doesn't make the Brazilian too sad though as he feels that, apart from the 1-1 result, the team performed well: «Unfortunately my goal wasn't enough to win this time. We should have done better getting another goal with all the chances we had. Shame about that funny bounce that cost us a goal. We're only at the beginning and we can only get better. Giovinco gave me a beautiful pass; he is proof of how strong the squad is, a squad where everyone is well-prepared when they're called into action».

*juventus.com

Ranieri: «The turf didn't help us»

For once, there was no home advantage for Juventus, as the Olimpico pitch was a distant relative to the beautiful turf seen here last season, and they were unable to have the better of Catania tonight. And it wasn't only because of the irregular bounce that surprised Chiellini leading to Plasmati's equalizer.

At the end of the match, Claudio Ranieri expressed his regrets for the final result: «This time it was Catania who came back from behind. We'd scored on our first chance, but we were unable to play our usual game tonight. With the pitch in this state, the lads were forced to play a lot of long balls, as we had against Zenit; we had to open up to try and score and so we let one in, again because of a bad bounce. But anyway, I'm pleased with the team's performance, it's just a shame we couldn't get the second in despite all the chances we had. Giovinco? He played well; he did what I expected him to do».

Juve Still After Schweinsteiger

Juventus have not given up on acquiring Bastian Schweinsteiger from Bayern Munich, according to reports...

Juventus inquired about Schweinsteiger this summer, but nothing concrete came out of the Bianconeri's supposed interest in the player. It was thought Juve had moved on to other targets, but according to Il Giornale, they are still interested in bringing the German international to Turin.

The 24-year-old has been in the Bayern first-team squad since 2002; however, his contract runs out at the end of this season and he could be available for free if he does not sign an extension with they German giants.

Juventus seem to be the club in pole position, as they look to find a replacement for the ageing Pavel Nedved, who turned 36 this August.

However, Schweinsteiger is well known after his international exploits in Euro 2004, World Cup 2006 and Euro 2008, where he performed admirably for his country, scoring some key goals. He is likely to attract plenty of interest from other clubs as well, including both Inter and AC Milan in Serie A.

Schweinsteiger scored the first goal of the Bundesliga in the new 2008/09 season and has 59 caps and 17 goals for his country. He is a candidate to take over the German captaincy once Michael Ballack is no longer part of the national team set-up.

Ranieri urges Seba patience

Juventus boss Claudio Ranieri has discussed the possibility of Sebastian Giovinco stepping in for the injured David Trezeguet.

Trez underwent surgery on both knees earlier today and isn't expected to return to the pitch before the end of January 2009.

“They tell me that his operation went well and that makes me happy,” Ranieri said.

“I knew that he had a problem with his other knee as well and it's not for me to ask about the nature of the procedure.”

The loss of Trezeguet could hand Azzurrini starlet Sebastian Giovinco a chance in the first team.

“His time will come slowly but surely - we shouldn't wait for him like a Messiah,” Ranieri asserted.

“We have to see him as a lad who needs to be slowly integrated and we have to take a responsible approach.

“I have never said that he poses a tactical problem. He is just developing as a player - he always played in the centre and then he was on the left at Empoli.

“I brought him back to be a back-up to Pavel Nedved but that doesn't mean that he can't be used in attack.

“I have a lot of faith in him. He works hard and he has great quality but let's give him some time.”

Juventus currently lead Serie A along with Inter and their next test is a home game against Catania.

“It's too early to talk about a title race with Inter,” Ranieri stressed. “It's an open championship and Milan, Roma and Fiorentina are still in it, as well as Lazio, who have started well, Napoli and Sampdoria.

“Now I am expecting to face a Catania side looking to build on their performance at San Siro.

“They troubled us twice last term when we won 1-0 and when we needed a last-gasp Alessandro Del Piero penalty to get a draw.”

Trez has double operation

Juventus hitman David Trezeguet has undergone successful surgery on both knees this morning.

The French ace suffered a tendon tear during the Old Lady's Champions League clash with Zenit St Petersburg last week.

And while doctors Giuliano Cerulli and Flavio Quaglia were operating on the right knee, they also took the chance to address a meniscus problem in his left.

The procedure took an hour and a quarter in total and Trezeguet will now require a lengthy period of rehabilitation.

Early indications are that Trez will be back at Claudio Ranieri's disposal by the end of January 2009.

In the meantime, the injury may give Vincenzo Iaquinta or Sebastian Giovinco the chance to shine on the big stage.

Andrade nears Juve exit

Juventus are close to agreeing the rescission of stricken defender Jorge Andrade's contract.

The Portuguese international signed for the Old Lady last summer from Deportivo La Coruna for around £8m but his time in Turin has been ravaged by injury.

After just four Serie A appearances, Andrade fractured a kneecap while playing against Roma last September and has been out of action since.

Just as it seemed that Andrade was ready to return to action this July, he suffered a repeat of the same injury in training and is out again for the foreseeable future.

Andrade's contract contains a clause that allows the unilateral conclusion of his contract in the event he is ruled out of action for more than six months.

Bianconeri sporting director Alessio Secco has been negotiating an agreement to annul Andrade's deal, which was set to expire in 2010 and the situation is likely to be resolved shortly.

Ranieri: «We've always suffered against Catania»

There's really no time to catch a breath. After three games in one week (all won), Juventus are ready to play again. This week the Wednesday night game won't be a Champions League one, but a League match. The first of four midweek rounds is on, and Juve play at home against Catania.

Catania were the last team Juve faced in Turin last season, and one of only two teams able to finish the season without ever losing to the Bianconeri. Del Piero saved the day near the end in both of those matches. And it's on the basis of those two games that this new clash has been prepared: «Last year, both at home and away, they were winning 1-0 and we were forced to come back near the end – Ranieri recalled during today’s press conference - . I believe Catania will come here with that same spirit, they only have one point less than us and they did well at San Siro against Inter Milan. Besides, they have a good Manager such as Zenga, who has always tried to improve himself; he went abroad and was able to win a lot. I wish him all the best».

After reaching the top of the League, and two wins against Udinese and Cagliari, the Bianconeri want to continue winning and, most of all, confirm how much they've improved. Step by step, Ranieri is seeing “his” Juve coming out. «We're not fluid yet, but it's ok. The old players are allowing the new ones to settle in. We're getting close to being synchronized in our movements, but we're lacking fluidity in game play, we're not maintaining the right distances and we make some small mistakes, but we'll improve by playing. And we must focus on one game at a time. Leaving out all the rest is the only way to keep maximum concentration. We've been tighter in these first few games, our strikers helped out more and we’ve been allowing fewer chances to our opponents».

After only three League games, the papers seem to have found a main theme in the new duel between Juventus and Inter Milan, who currently share the top spot. But Ranieri thinks it's too early to talk about a two-team race. «There's a long way to go and Roma, AC Milan and Fiorentina are all just behind. Plus there are teams like Lazio, Napoli and Sampdoria who can take away points from anybody. It's going to be an exciting tournament, more hard-fought than last year's one. It'll be decided at the end and I hope Juventus will still be up there fighting with the others by then. Inter Milan remain the favourites, but at the moment we're more of a team, because Mourinho, being new, is forced to do what I did last year».

Secco Promises Two Big Signings Next Summer

Juventus sporting director Alessio Secco is pleased with the way Juventus are shaping up and vows to add two champions to their ranks next summer.

The young director took over from Luciano Moggi in the wake of the Calciopoli scandal and has found out that being in charge of the Old Lady's transfer dealings is not an easy job: aside from Mohamed Sissoko, last term's recruitments turned out to be major flops in Turin and fans soon pointed the finger at Moggi's former protege.

Even this summer, the arrival of Christian Poulsen raised eyebrows among hardcore Juve supporters, who had hoped to see a gifted midfield maestro like Liverpool's Xabi Alonso wearing the Bianconero.

But the early results in both Serie A and Europe have confirmed that Juve are back among the creme of European football and have all the requirements to fight all the way in all the competitions.

And Alessio is keen to reassure the Bianconeri faithful that there is more to come: "We will bring in at least two big-name players next summer," he told the Corriere dello Sport.

"However, I will only tell you this much: one of them will come in to fill Nedved's boots when he retires; as for the second one, I can only say we are looking at different options, but I won't mention any names. I'm not crazy!"

"Moreover, some youngsters could return to base: I'm thinking of Davide Lanzafame, Cristian Pasquato and Oussama Essabr in particular."

Another talented prospect is Sebastian Giovinco, who is not finding much space this season and has yet to reach an agreement over his new contract.

"He wants quite a lot of money," admitted Secco, "but he has a contract until 2011 and has to understand that there are certain parameters for the established players and others for the youngsters, who have to follow a given path first.

"Paolo De Ceglie and Claudio Marchisio are among those and will be the foundation of this club in the near future: Marchisio reminds me of De Rossi and De Ceglie has already proved his worth, and we are considering offering him a renewal."

Then Secco looked over the summer transfer campaign and explained the decision to pursuit Poulsen instead of Alonso: "It is not a case of who is better between the Dane and the Spanish: we were looking for a solid midfield man who could also shore up the back-line and Cristian was the one that more suited Claudio Ranieri's plan."

"As for the other arrivals, landing Amauri was tough, he had lots of suitors, but we had the upper hand because we approached him first.

"Olof Mellberg was explicitly requested by Ranieri, who knew him from his England experience.

"Any regrets for not capturing Alberto Aquilani? Well, I would not talk about regrets, we tried to negotiate but soon understood that Roma were not willing to part company with him."

The Old Lady were dealt a huge blow this week, with news that David Trezeguet will be out for at least three months and will undergo surgery on his right knee, but Secco reckons it will not be necessary to replace him by signing a free-agent: "Absolutely not," he firmly declared, "we have plenty of options to get by without the services of the Frenchman, we have Giovinco and he will be back by January anyway."

In the meantime the Bianconeri have signed young Spanish prospect Iago Falqué from Barcelona, but Alessio is quick to refute the notion that they "stole" him from under the Blaugrana's noses: "First of all we did not steal anyone," he bellowed.

"He was having problems at Barca and we reached an agreement with them: we did not pay anything, but Barcelona will be entitled to a certain amount of money if the lad plays at least 40 games.

"Anyway, he is part of our long-term project: we are immensely proud of what we have achieved until now, we could not have done better. I can now look the stars who stuck with us through the Serie B nightmare in the eyes and tell them it was woth it."

Player Rating at cagliari

Buffon: 7: Was struggling with injury for most of the first half, but still managed to produce a superb save from Matri on the half-hour to keep the scores level. Forced off at the break for Manninger.

Salihamidzic: 6: Not a natural right back, and it showed at times. Was oufoxed by Matri when the striker forced a fine save out of Buffon.

Chiellini: 6.5: Not the all-conquering colossus that he was against Zenit in midweek but still a steady and solid match from the Euro 2008 star.

Mellberg: 7: Mellberg's best game since arriving in Turin in the summer. Made a number of fine interceptions and blocks, and coped comfortably with Acquafresca when he came on at half time.

Molinaro: 5: Had an awful first half, in which he was caught sleeping at a quick throw-in and also played a near-suicidal ball across his box. To his credit Molinaro improved in the second half.

Marchionni: 7: It is a miracle Marchionni lasted the 90 minutes given his injury record, but the winger was involved in many of Juve's best moments. His cross led to Amauri's goal, while another ball almost led to Iaquinta grabbing a second.

Marchisio: 6: Showed some nice touches, and held his own in the middle-of-the-park, but never really imposed himself on the game.

Sissoko: 6.5: Battled well in the middle-of-the-park, and was tough in the tackle. Had a good opening to the second half until he was taken off by Ranieri just shy of the hour mark.

Nedved: 7.5
: Three full games in seven days for a 36-year-old was a big ask, but he surprisingly came through with flying colours. Nedved was excellent this afternoon, particularly in the second period where he went close to doubling Juve's lead.

Iaquinta: 6.5: Never stopped running and fighting all game as he usually does, and he was involved in the action for the goal. However, the World Cup winner's finishing needs to improve.

Amauri: 8: Really starting to pay back his hefty summer transfer fee is the Brazilian. This afternoon Amauri was a beast up-front, winning absolutely everything in the air. Took his goal well, meaning that he is Juve's matchwinner for the second Serie A matchday running.

Substitutes

Manninger: 7.5

Tiago: 6

De Ceglie: 6.5

Juve Welcome Back Del Piero

Juventus forward Alessandro Del Piero has recovered from his minor injury for Wednesday's clash with Catania...

Alessandro Del Piero scored a spectacular freekick against Zenit St. Petersburg in the Champions League last week, but was forced to miss Juventus' 1-0 win in Serie A over Cagliari at the Stadio Sant'Elia on Sunday.

The Bianconeri captain picked up a minor knock near the end of that Champions League match with Zenit, but is now fully recovered and available to Claudio Ranieri once again, according the official Juventus website.

Del Piero is happy to return and of course also pleased with the recent string of victories: "We have achieved a great victory away from home after a difficult game. We are delighted to have begun this important series of matches every three days with victories against Zenit and Cagliari."

The Italian international is likely to start the match against the Sicilians along with the in-form Amauri, while Vincenzo Iaquinta should find himself in a substitute role. Del Piero's quick return is even more important as it had recently been confirmed that David Trezeguet will be missing three to five months of action.

Juve will be confident of obtaining three points when they host Catania, but the Elefanti may be spurred on by the fact they are only one point behind the Bianconeri.

Secco defends troublesome Tiago

Juventus sporting director Alessio Secco refuses to see unsettled midfielder Tiago Mendes as a burden.

Tiago has failed to settle in Turin since arriving from Lyon last summer and had looked set for a transfer in pre-season.

However, the Portuguese international refused to move to Everton, Newcastle, Tottenham or Monaco and ended up staying with the Bianconeri, against the club's wishes.

“The boy isn't a problem,” Secco maintained in the Corriere dello Sport.

“He's not the type of person to create trouble inside the club, even if he did do this at first by refusing all the moves we lined up for him.

“We will see what happens in January because maybe he will wake up and become useful again.”

Sergio Almiron arrived at the same time as Tiago and also struggled with the Old Lady, but he is now impressing on loan at Fiorentina.

“Almiron's form in Florence is a sign that I didn't make the wrong choice in signing him,” Secco insisted.

“On the one hand, I'm glad he's doing well because we still own him but on the other hand I'm disappointed he failed to perform with us - the Juve shirt can weigh heavily on some players.”

Trezeguet ready for surgery

Juventus trained in the afternoon today, to start preparing Wednesday's game against Catania. The squad was divided in two groups: those who played against Cagliari had a light session, to which Zanetti and Zebina took part, as they're on their way to recovering from their respective injuries.

Meanwhile Juventus' medical staff announced that David Trezeguet will be operated on at the Fornaca Clinic tomorrow morning; Prof. Giuliano Cerulli and Prof. Flavio Quaglia will be carrying out the surgery.
First of all it will be necessary to carry out an arthroscopy, to examine the hamstring and evaluate the damage suffered against Zenit, and then the damage itself will be repaired. It must be stressed that Trezeguet's injury is brand new; it occurred during the Champions League game, and has nothing to do with his past hamstring problems. David will rest for fifteen days after the operation, and will start his special rehabilitation treatments in the following fifteen-twenty days.
Recovery times may vary from a minimum of three and a half months up to four-five months at most.

Gigi Buffon, who had to be replaced during the half-time break of the game against Cagliari, underwent ultrasound scans today. The keeper stretched a muscle in his right thigh; this caused a muscle contracture, but from today's tests it looks as if there was no damage. In any case Gigi will undergo further tests on Wednesday.
Therefore he'll be missing the midweek game and it looks like he'll probably be missing Saturday's game too, as the prognosis for this kind of injury is usually about 10 days.

Camoranesi's condition will be checked on again tomorrow, whereas Alessandro Del Piero will be available again for Wednesday's game against Catania. Claudio Ranieri will be speaking about the match against the Sicilian side in the usual press conference held on the eve of the match, tomorrow at the Media Center in Vinovo from 12.30 pm onwards.

Ranieri: Amauri's a bargain!

Claudio Ranieri gave an injury update on Gigi Buffon and hailed Amauri as “a fantastic signing.”

The Brazilian scored the winner away to Cagliari this afternoon, a result that puts Juventus top of the table alongside Inter awaiting Lazio’s result tonight.

“He is a fantastic signing and a master of working the ball,” grinned Ranieri.

“Those who haven’t played as much have done very well so far and it isn’t easy to be ready when you are called.”

Juve made the trip without the injured David Trezeguet, Alessandro Del Piero, Mauro Camoranesi, Cristiano Zanetti, Jonathan Zebina and Zdenek Grygera.

“It would’ve been better if we had been able to get a more comprehensive result and put it under lock and key.

“Instead the game remained open until the very end and Cagliari had the chance to equalise with Alessandro Matri.

“We weren’t at our best in front of goal, but on a pitch in poor condition it was difficult to pass the ball around the way we usually do.”

Goalkeeper Buffon went off at half-time clutching the inside of his upper right thigh, making way for Alex Manninger.

“We will evaluate his condition tomorrow. I preferred not to risk it, so we’ll calmly look at the extend of the problem.”

Tiago Mendes made a rare appearance in the second half and Ranieri has not given up on the midfielder who refused moves to Everton, Monaco and Tottenham.

“Tiago has great technique and has shown himself to be open to helping out the team. Who knows, maybe this year without pressure he will be able to prove his quality.”

Trez: I won't end up like Ronaldo

David Trezeguet explains why he’s undergoing surgery to “avoid being like Ronaldo. I’ll miss four months, but extend my career by five years.”

Juventus fans were in shock yesterday when the club announced Trezeguet would go under the knife to correct a knee tendon problem.

This will keep him off the field for four months, but the Frenchman insists it is not worth it to risk any other course of action.

“An operation is the best thing to do,” he told l’Equipe. “I could wait a little longer, but there is the serious risk I could break the tendon, just like what happened to Ronaldo.

“Quite frankly, I really don’t want to end up like that.”

Ronaldo snapped the tendon in his left knee during a 1-1 draw with Livorno on February 13 and has still not returned to the pitch, as his contract with Milan expired.

“It is true I’ll miss four months of this season, but with the surgery I could extend my career by five or six years,” continued Trezeguet.

“I hope to be back to 100 per cent fitness for the final months of the season, when we should still be challenging for the Champions League, Coppa Italia and Serie A.”

Juve win again thanks to Amauri

It's 1-0 week: after Udinese and Zenit, Juventus won at Cagliari too with the same result, thanks to an Amauri goal, but the defence did their part too, Manninger imitating Buffon to save on Matri near the end. The Bianconeri now have seven points and are already top of the League, the same as Inter Milan, who play later tonight. On Wednesday the next test, against Catania at the Olimpico.

The first long period without Trezeguet began today. Del Piero, Camoranesi, Zanetti and Zebina were also unavailable. Ranieri chose Amauri and Iaquinta up front for the match at Cagliari, coming between the ones against Zenit and Catania. Marchionni replaced Camoranesi. Grygera, Legrottaglie and Poulsen were rested. Salihamidzic, Mellberg and Marchionni played instead. Molinaro was selected over De Ceglie.

The fears before the match, remembering how the two games went last year, proved to be well-founded. Cagliari still had no points and played an open game, forcing the Bianconeri's defence to work hard on more than one occasion. The game could've had a turning point early on, but Amauri's goal was disallowed by referee Brighi, who saw a Iaquinta foul.

Buffon had a tougher afternoon than expected, especially because he suffered a muscle injury after just a few minutes. The keeper put on a brave face, and resisted the whole first half, proving decisive, especially on a Matri volley. With the half-time break approaching, Juve got their goal. Marchionni crossed from the left, Iaquinta controlled the ball and set up Amauri, whose shot was as spectacular as it was effective: it was the second goal from the Brazilian in one week and the half ended 1-0.

Only 20 of the 22 players that had started the match came on for the second half: Buffon was forced to leave and leave his place to Manninger, who made his official debut. On the other side, Acquafresca replaced Larrivey. Iaquinta had a chance, Bianco was booked, and then there was another substitution. Ranieri tried Tiago for Sissoko. Allegri replied putting on Jeda for Fini, with Cagliari aiming to try all they could to score.

But the Bianconeri had the best chances, twice with Iaquinta scissor kicks and then with a long-range shot by Marchisio, who was later booked; Ranieri then took the young midfielder off – who was also injured -, replacing him with De Ceglie. The hosts never gave up and Jeda was the most dangerous man, with Manninger having to save on him twice. But the Austrian keeper's true masterpiece save came in the 90th minute, on a Matri volley - a save that was as important as the goal by Amauri. So Juve fly to the top of the League, thanks also to their new players' contribution.

Amauri, six points in one week

Claudio Ranieri has never failed to praise how easily the new players have fit in. And indeed it was the new guys who put their stamp on the win at Cagliari: Amauri with another decisive goal, and Manninger with a superb save right at the last minute.

Two goals and six points for Juventus: the Brazilian was again the match winner of the game at the Sant’Elia, after deciding the one against Udinese. «We created several chances and were unable to convert all of them, but the important thing is that we've won. I'm happy about the goal, I always concentrate on doing the best for the team, playing for this Club is the chance of a lifetime and I want to make the most of it. The partnership with Iaquinta is working, but most of all it's the whole squad that's working fine and we try and win all together. Trezeguet? I'm really sorry for his injury, I know what it means to stay out for a long time, but I'm sure he'll come back stronger than ever».

Ranieri: «Congratulations to those who had played less»

On the eve of the away trip to Sardinia, Claudio Ranieri had bet that those lads who, for whatever reason, had had less chances to show their worth so far, would come out with a good performance. And he's won that bet. At the Sant’Elia, with players of the calibre of Del Piero, Trezeguet, Camoranesi, Zanetti and Zebina staying back at home, and also without Legrottaglie, Poulsen and Grygera, all rested today, and even without Buffon for one half of the match, Juventus still played an excellent game and earned three precious points to take back to Turin.

After the match, he especially congratulated those lads and the strength of the group as a whole. «They did really well and they're all doing good work together. Today we suffered a little near the end because we didn't convert all the chances we created. It wasn't easy playing on this pitch, that's why we were forced to play long balls to cut out the midfield and Amauri was excellent in keeping control of the ball and allowing team mates to come up. Buffon? We'll see tomorrow with the medical staff. We didn't want to risk it and that's why we replaced him after the first half. Let's hope it's nothing serious».

Blanc: «A win for our fans»

One year ago around this time, Juventus were getting their first away win after returning to Serie A at Cagliari, an eventful 3-2 win with many risks.

This time it was a less spectacular 1-0 win, but no less important. At the end, only the Bianconeri fans at the Sant’Elia were able to celebrate.

Before leaving Cagliari, Managing Director Jean-Claude Blanc dedicated the win to those fans. «It was the right thing to do going underneath their stands, to show how close we are to our fans: they’re always the focus of all we do. There was great group spirit today, both among the players and among our people. This was an important win because it's never easy to play after the Champions League and I'm happy about the performances of lads such as Manninger and Tiago. They show that the team worked well during the week and they were fully ready to play today when called upon».

Del Piero still shines in Champions League clash

Some people would've been reminded of the goals he scored in his best year, 2005. Others may consider it a new invention from a free kick. In any case, it was a masterpiece. Del Piero shone once again and Juventus set off in the Champions League on the right foot. An excellent Zenit side were beaten by 1-0. Juve get their first three points, as do Real Madrid, who beat the Bianconeri's upcoming opponents Bate by 2-0.

For the first “real” European match, Ranieri picked those who earned Juve a place in the Champions League itself. Buffon in goal; Grygera, Legrottaglie, Chiellini and Molinaro in defence; in midfield he confirmed the four who played against Udinese: Camoranesi, Sissoko, Poulsen and Nedved; Del Piero with Trezeguet up front.

Zenit were expected to be a valid team and they proved to be so, playing at the Olimpico with no fear and not like the underdogs. So the Bianconeri defenders had to be extra-careful at all times, particularly on runs on the wings. With time, Ranieri's team found their feet and started to create chances, mainly from Del Piero crosses: first with a Trezeguet header that went wide and then another header, by Camoranesi, that hit the post.

The Italian-Argentinean had no chance to do anything else as he had to go out after half an hour when he was hit hard on his right ankle. Salihamidzic replaced him, but nothing much happened until half-time, with Juve regretting the big chance they had when they hit the post.

In the second half, Zenit came forward more, and Buffon had to save on Arshavin. Ranieri made another substitution, replacing Molinaro with De Ceglie, who made his Champions League debut on his 22nd birthday. Once again, Juve played better in the latter part of the game. Malafeev made a miracle save on a Poulsen header, but he could do nothing minutes later when, after 76 minutes, Del Piero scored with a stunningly precise free kick in the top corner.

Zenit didn't want to lose it and tried attacking in force, but Buffon had no extraordinary saves to make, also helped out by Chiellini, who was absolutely fantastic in a couple of defensive plays. The win is as much his as the Captain's. So the adventure has begun in the best possible way, and now Juve will get ready to face first Bate Borisov and then Real Madrid.

Del Piero: «We waited a long time for this win»

Two years of anger, tension and sacrifices were unloaded in that shot towards Zenit's goal. With his remarkable free kick, Alessandro Del Piero didn't simply give the team a crucial win in the Champions League, but maybe put an end to the period started with the relegation to Serie B for good. From today, Juventus are to all effects and purposes back where they belong, where they deserve to be thanks to their history and their pedigree.

When he celebrated, the Captain showed his joy to the world with an unusual somersault, and then confirmed his feelings in the post-match interviews: «We've been waiting for this win for two years, that's why we were all so happy after the goal and then after the final whistle. This game, just like many other results from other games, demonstrates that it's really close in the Champions League and it's never easy to win. That's the reason why our win tonight is so important. Obviously I'm very happy about the goal. Perhaps it isn't the most beautiful free kick I've ever scored, but maybe it's one of the most important».

Buffon-Chiellini, the defence's seal on the win

In the end Claudio Ranieri was proved right. He felt the Bianconeri's eagerness to redeem themselves, especially those who stayed when the Club were relegated to Serie B, would be decisive in the first Champions League match after two years away from the action. Del Piero sealed the win and showed all of Europe that Juve are back and they mean business. But the defenders – especially Buffon and Chiellini – were also integral in the win.

Here are the super-keeper and the Livorno-based defender's comments at the end of the game.

Buffon: «At first we were a bit shy, we felt the moment as it was like a new debut for us after some time. In matches like this it's important not to concede a goal, because with the great players we have up front, we can always score one ourselves. This win has a special meaning; we'd been waiting for it for a long time, and so did our fans».

Chiellini: «It wasn't easy. We were facing a team that showed how great they are in the Super Cup Final against Manchester United. They have some impressive players, especially up front; they can always create chances to score. We did well in keeping them in check, and then Del Piero did the rest, giving us an important win».

Ranieri: «It's tough to play against Zenit»

All the fears before the match proved to be well-founded. Zenit are one of the top teams in Europe by now after their recent wins in the UEFA Cup and the Super Cup. And tonight at the Olimpico the Russians showed again how dangerous they are.

That's why kicking off with a win against such high-calibre opponents is a great way to start for the Bianconeri. And Claudio Ranieri knows it: «We faced a team at their peak, whereas we're mostly fit for the League at the moment. I knew we'd need some kind of invention to win a game like this, luckily Del Piero is good at these things and he showed it. People are curious to see how we can face two illustrious competitions such as these this season. But that's why we equipped ourselves with two players in each role, so that we can swap them around in the various matches».

Camoranesi ankle injury to be evaluated

The only small negative note in tonight's win against Zenit on the Champions League opening day was Camoranesi's injury. The Italian-Argentinean was forced to go off after 31 minutes in the first half as he was hit hard on his right ankle and suffered a mild sprain.

The midfielder's condition will be further determined in the next few hours.

Del Piero propels Juve to victory

Juventus marked their return to the UEFA Champions League after a three-year absence with a narrow win against FC Zenit St. Petersburg which was earned by a trademark free-kick from Alessandro Del Piero.

Deadly Del Piero
Juventus had failed to find their spark for most of the Group H match, only really threatening the UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup holders from set-pieces – but that proved enough. With 14 minutes to go, Zenit gave away one foul too many and Del Piero took full advantage, showing that he remains as dangerous as ever with the dead ball by lacing it into the roof of the net.

Welcome return
The players had enjoyed a rapturous welcome as the Curva Scirea erupted at the sight of their side emerging on to this stage for the first time in three seasons. For Zenit, though, this was also a momentous night. It was their UEFA Champions League debut, and a large flag depicting Andrei Arshavin with a finger to his lips was a warning to the hosts. The Zenit No10 began brightly too, orchestrating a sweeping move from which the visitors should have scored eleven minutes in. Danny charged upfield, supported by Pavel Pogrebnyak who crossed to the far post; Igor Denisov headed the ball back across goal, where Danny somehow screwed it wide with only Gianluigi Buffon to beat.

Sissoko drive
Juventus were subdued until, after 15 minutes, they stated their intent: Del Piero picked out David Trezeguet's run with a pinpoint cross which the Frenchman glanced wide. Del Piero looked lively, his close control and trickery providing a marked contrast to Mohamed Sissoko's rugged style, although it was the latter's tough tackling and midfield drive which helped swing the momentum the way of the hosts. They almost took the lead on 26 minutes when Mauro Camoranesi's near-post header hit the post following Del Piero's curled free-kick. Camoranesi had also caught the eye but his premature exit, after a knock to his calf, stymied Juve's creativity.

Stilted
On an uneven-looking pitch, Claudio Ranieri's men struggled to string their passes together and with invention at a premium the Italian side began resorting to route one. Trezeguet fired over after 51 minutes after running on to Buffon's clearance. Zenit, meanwhile, had been limited to shots from distance, with Danny's hopeful 33rd-minute effort never really troubling the Italy No1, yet after the break Dick Advocaat's team showed greater purpose. Aleksandr Anyukov, Denisov and Danny all found space down the right only for their crosses to be repelled each time. But for Buffon, though, a Russian breakthrough would have arrived after 56 minutes: Radek Šírl controlled Arshavin's low pass superbly but was smothered by the quick reactions of the outrushing keeper.

Del Piero strike
The Bianconeri's only real menace appeared to stem from set-pieces, and they came close to grabbing the advantage when Pavel Nedvěd's free-kick was flicked on by Christian Poulsen and Vyacheslav Malafeev saved brilliantly at the far post. Zenit failed to heed the warning, however, as Nedvěd was brought down 30 metres out; this time Del Piero stepped up and, for once, Malafeev could not intervene.

Del Piero: «This return is full of meaning»

Many among the Juventini have been anxiously awaiting the moment of their return in the Champions League, including all the players who have gone through these incredible last two years. Two years of sacrifices, but also and foremost two years of victories. And now, with Wednesday's match against Zenit coming up, everyone will be able to taste the magic atmosphere of the most illustrious European Club competition again.

One of these is definitely Alessandro Del Piero. The Captain has carried the team through Serie B and then through the season of their return to Serie A, scoring more than anybody else (he was top scorer both seasons), and is even more eager to do well than before. That's why the first Champions League game in two years is an achievement in itself: «It makes us all feel good: me, the Club, everybody. In terms of what we did in the last two years, this return is full of meaning. That's why I'm over the moon».

Wednesday night's match at the Olimpico (a novelty for the Turin stadium after all the years playing at the Delle Alpi) will almost feel like a new debut for the Captain, 13 years after his first appearance in the competition. There'll be no shortage of excitement: «Just as we weren't really like other newly promoted Clubs last year in Serie A, we can't really see ourselves as newbies in Europe either. We're curious because a lot of things have changed in the last two years, but no-one can afford to forget what this team has done in its 100 year-plus history. If they still consider us as a surprise, so much the better, we can exploit this. We will be playing very hard-fought games, but they're going to be tough for our opponents too».

The first team to be faced is called Zenit, and it represents Russian football, an emerging phenomenon; a team that have become well-known in Europe by getting important wins. That's why it won't be an easy debut, but there's no risk of underestimating Juve's opponents: «I watched the UEFA Cup Final last year and the recent Super Cup one – Del Piero continued – but I also followed Russia's run at the European Championships. I noticed they've got great qualities, both in terms of individual players and as a team».

Anticipation growing for European debut

With the League set aside for now after the win over Udinese, Juventus have begun the countdown to their Champions League debut. On Wednesday night, at the Olimpico, Russian Champions Zenit St. Petersburg will be the Bianconeri's first official opponents in the top European tournament, two years after Juve last took part.

In view of this tough game, the team resumed training immediately just a few hours after the win against the team from Friuli. The Bianconeri worked this afternoon in Vinovo. As ever, those who played on Sunday held a lighter session than those who didn't, who trained as normal. Among them was also Cristiano Zanetti, who missed the League game as a precaution but will be available again for the European debut.

The countdown to the game will continue tomorrow, Tuesday September 16th. As is the tradition in the Champions League, the eve of the match will be dedicated to the official press conferences. Both the Bianconeri's one (featuring Ranieri and Del Piero) and the Russians' one will take place at the Olimpico Stadium, and both teams will also carry out their last training session on the pitch there (see schedule).

Meanwhile, sale of tickets continues. Just over 48 hours from the event, 17,500 tickets have already been sold. Therefore, there are still a few seats available for the fans. The online phase of the sale has ended, but fans can buy their tickets in the officially sanctioned Lottomatica outlets.

Belgian De Bleeckere to referee Champions League debut

One of the most experienced referees in the business has been selected as the match official for Juventus' return in the Champions League proper. Indeed Frank De Bleeckere, who hails from Belgium, will referee Wednesday's game against Zenit. He recently refereed the Spain vs. Russia semi-final at the European Championships in Switzerland and Austria.

De Bleeckere has refereed Juventus twice before. The first time, back in 1999, in a UEFA Cup match against Levski Sofia, in Turin, which ended 1-1 (Kovacevic scored the goal). The second time is more recent and not a happy memory for the Bianconeri. De Bleeckere was at Anfield Road for the Liverpool vs. Juventus clash in the 2004/05 edition of the Champions League, a game which ended 2-1 for the English side (Cannavaro scoring for the Bianconeri), who would then go on to knock out Juventus by drawing 0-0 at the Delle Alpi in the second leg.

The many Zenit players who are part of the Russian National team have the fresh memory of the game against the Spaniards when they were denied a place in the European Final.

The other officials at the Olimpico will also be from Belgium. Peter Hermans and Alex Verstraeten will be the assistant referees, while Peter Vervecken will be acting as the fourth official.

New Holland in Europe with Juventus

Juventus' return to big-time Europe has not only made all their very many fans extremely happy, but also those sponsors that kept strong ties with the Club especially in the last two years.

Among them, New Holland, a company of the FIAT Group, whose logo appears on the Bianconeri's jerseys since the beginning of the last season. To celebrate Del Piero and team mates’ new adventure in the Champions League, the sponsors will launch – starting tomorrow, eve of the Zenit match – an advertising campaign on all the biggest sport publications in Europe.

“Always close to our players' heart”: this is the catchphrase (translated into the various languages) that will appear superimposed to the image of a player with a hand on his heart: definitely a great way to wish the squad managed by Claudio Ranieri the best of luck.

Amauri gets the three points

The European atmosphere does good to Juventus. Zenit, Bate and Real Madrid all won, and the Bianconeri did too, getting their first League win this season. At the Olimpico, Amauri gave joy to the fans scoring the goal that beat Udinese in what was a clear and deserved win, much more so than the final 1-0 result may suggest.

The Bianconeri's second night game in a row was influenced by the imminent Champions League debut. Ranieri rested Del Piero and Trezeguet (but also Legrottaglie, Molinaro and Giovinco) and gave a chance to the Amauri-Iaquinta partnership up front. Sissoko and Chiellini were back in the team, and De Ceglie earned a place in the starting eleven for the first time.

The experiment worked from the start and Juve dominated the entire first half. Camoranesi and Nedved's attacking efforts, Sissoko's forays forward and De Ceglie's and Grygera's runs were all aimed at feeding the two up front, who were often reactive and prompt. The Amauri-Iaquinta duo duelled extensively with opposing keeper Handanovic, but the latter often won the duel, also thanks to a post hit by the Brazilian with a header.

On the other side, the much-feared Di Natale and his fellow striker Quagliarella were kept under check without any problem by the defensive duo made up by Mellberg and Chiellini. The teams went on break with the score still at 0-0, but Juventus really would've deserved to be winning already at that point.

Things didn't change in the second half, also because Ranieri didn't swap any of his players. Marino made a change after 58 minutes when he replaced his team’s star Di Natale. Juve kept dominating and Handanovic was helped by the woodwork again when a thunderous Poulsen shot hit the crossbar. But at last, after numerous attempts, the Friuli team's bunker finally fell. It happened in the 67th minute when Sissoko tried breaking through from the centre and the ball rebounded towards Amauri who was quick to shoot in the bottom corner and celebrate his first League goal in the best possible way, scoring a beautiful and important goal.

Marino replied by putting on Isla and Floro Flores and Buffon was called into action at last. He saved splendidly on Quagliarella but play had already been stopped. Ranieri made his first change after 80 minutes when he put on Marchionni in place of Iaquinta. And five minutes later he put on both Del Piero and Trezeguet at the same time, replacing Amauri and Camoranesi. Udinese had one last chance when Floro Flores appealed for a penalty that referee De Marco denied. The result didn't change and it ended with a much wider win than the final 1-0 result shows. In any case, it's the best possible omen in view of the return to Europe. And this time it's going to be the real Europe, the one called Champions League.

Ranieri: «We played a perfect match for 85 minutes, it was impossible to keep it up until the end»

The first of seven matches in 20 days has been won. This intense period has kicked off in the best possible way, with a win against tough opponents Udinese and thanks to an extraordinary performance by the whole team. Claudio Ranieri can be twice as happy because of this.

At the end of the game, with thoughts already turning to Wednesday's match, Juve's Manager had the chance to congratulate his lads: «We played a great match for 85 minutes, especially in the first part, when we always played a quick passing game and created many chances, opening up their defence. Obviously we couldn't keep up that kind of pace until the end and we had to suffer a little bit before the final whistle. I'm pleased because it was like watching last year's Juve, all credit to the new players who have settled in very well. Wednesday's game? Concentration comes automatically in the Champions League. We'll face Zenit, who are having a good spell, they're on form, they’re good at defending and quickly going on the counter-attack. That's why we have to be careful, playing our own game and not falling into their trap».

Camoranesi: «Pace was the secret to our win»

Two excellent performances with the Azzurri in the space of a few days, and now another one with the Bianconeri. Mauro German Camoranesi was one of the best players again against Udinese, playing from the start despite some papers predicting he'd stay out to rest before the Zenit game. And everybody noticed his contribution.

The Italian-Argentinean analyzed the game after the final whistle. «It was partially similar to last year's game, when we created several chances and then lost to a goal on the counter-attack. We had several chances today again and we would've deserved to score already in the first half. The secret of our win is in the cracking pace we kept for the whole game and they could only try with long balls, on which our defence closed down well. We've overcome this hurdle, now Wednesday we face another one, and we'll do so with confidence. This year we're equipped to do well in Europe too».

*juventus.com

Amauri: «I dedicate this goal to those who've allowed me to get here»

A lot of goals in the summer friendlies; then a more important one in the Champions league qualifier in Bratislava; and now, one in the League too. Amauri is quickly settling in at Juve. And goals (and performances) such as the one against Udinese are crucial for the Brazilian to become more and more of a fan favourite.

Coming off the pitch at the Olimpico, the former Palermo player expressed his happiness to Juventus Channel. «This is a special goal, which I dedicate to my family and to all those who helped me to arrive here at Juve. We created many chances today, we hit the woodwork twice and Handanovic made some excellent saves. With a little more luck, we could've won more comprehensively. But the important thing is that we won, to prepare ourselves for Wednesday's game. The Champions League? It'll be a new adventure for me. I’ll try and be ready in case the Manager needs me».

Legrottaglie: I am reborn

Nicola Legrottaglie is back in the Italy jersey and explains why his career has been turned around. “I was too arrogant.”

The Juventus defender was an injury doubt with a thigh problem, but played the whole 90 minutes of tonight's 2-0 victory over Georgia.

“Tonight we got off to a great start and the first 25 minutes were excellent, pushing forward and leaving Georgia very little space.

“Clearly we lost our pace a bit as time wore on and when that happens you are inevitably squeezed back a little bit. We only went close to conceding once, which was mainly down to us being over-eager to get the job done and leaving ourselves unbalanced.”

The former Chievo star had vanished from the scene a couple of years ago, but was recalled for the Azzurri after injuries ruled out Giorgio Chiellini, Alessandro Gamberini and Marco Materazzi.

“I have always said I go forward on my path and what I do on the pitch speaks for me. I cannot say I deserve a place in the Nazionale and it all depends on my performance and of course what God wants for my life. I accept everything.”

Legrottaglie has been very vocal on the difference made to his life and career by becoming a born-again Christian.

“My life was changed and I was reborn as a man with my religion, so with that your everyday life and work is transformed. I had lost my humility when I first joined Juventus, I was too arrogant, so I regained my humility and those knocks were what I needed to get me back on track.”

He was chosen ahead of the younger Andrea Barzagli for this match and some have questioned the use of veterans such as Fabio Cannavaro and Legrottaglie in central defence.

“I've never been in such good physical and psychological shape, not even when I was 20. If a player is good, then it doesn't matter how old he is. Just look at Cannavaro!

“You need to win now, not in 10 years, so the Nazionale should pick the players in the best current shape.”

Like Daniele De Rossi, Legrottaglie also commented on the tiring schedule that throws the Italian players straight into international duty after just one Serie A round.

“Today we have already played 20 official games between Serie A, the Champions League and friendlies. A player has to rest his body, so if we do begin earlier then I'd say we need to have more of a break at Christmas.”

WCQ:Italy 2 - 0 Georgia

De Rossi 17, 89 (I)
Stadio Friuli

Daniele De Rossi's first ever Italy brace secured a 2-0 victory over Hector Cuper's Georgia to maintain a 100 per cent qualifying record. It was again hardly the most convincing performance, but with injuries piling up and fitness levels flagging, the results are the most important thing.

The Azzurri got off to a shaky start in their qualifying campaign, scraping a 2-1 win in Cyprus at the last minute through Antonio Di Natale's brace. The Udinese striker played in his 'home' stadium for this game, as Marcello Lippi switched to a 4-3-3 system. As Fabio Grosso, Alessandro Gamberini, Gennaro Gattuso, Giorgio Chiellini and Marco Materazzi were injured, Andrea Dessena, Nicola Legrottaglie - who passed a late fitness test on a muscular problem - and Alberto Aquilani stepped in.

There was controversy about the Stadio Friuli, as a stage was set up in one of the ends for the upcoming concert by Italian singer Vasco Rossi and it towered over the pitch.

Luca Toni felt he deserved a penalty when he went round Kakha Kaladze, but although the Milan defender grabbed his shorts, Toni did not put too much effort into standing his ground.

Italy went close on 13 minutes as Toni's header was fumbled round the base of the near post by goalkeeper Loria. Di Natale was very lively and combined with Toni to get between the two centre-backs, but his finish was deflected inches past the upright.

The deadlock was broken in absolutely spectacular fashion, as Daniele De Rossi unleashed a left-foot blockbuster from a good 30 yards that smashed into the top corner! Loria was given no chance with the sheer power of the Roma midfielder's sixth international strike.

Kaladze did well to nod a Di Natale cross off the head of Toni, but the problems shown against Cyprus were still present. On 26 minutes Georgia went on the counter as Palermo's Levan Mchelidze rolled across for the totally unmarked Kenia, but he incredibly stumbled from six yards and a deflection off Andrea Pirlo allowed Gigi Buffon to pluck the ball off the line.

The rest of the half was relatively uneventful, as Georgia continued to sit back and Italy controlled the ball.

Sampdoria midfielder Angelo Palombo replaced the quiet Pirlo at half-time, while Kvaskvhvadze came on for Eliava. Di Natale was caught offside as he went to head a Camoranesi free kick, but Fabio Cannavaro's clearance wasn't entirely effective at the other end.

Di Natale was given a standing ovation by the Friuli fans as he made way for Alessandro Del Piero.

The Azzurri had a great chance when Aquilani found space down the left flank and passed back for Toni in the six-yard box, but a Georgian defender managed to dive into the way and clear off the line.

Dossena went on the counter, but Del Piero's curler was over the bar from 10 yards. Vincenzo Iaquinta, fondly remembered for his years at the Friuli, replaced Toni.

Loria smothered an Aquilani snapshot, but some sections of the stadium thought Italy had doubled their lead with a Iaquinta angled half-volley, as it shook the side-netting.

It was still only 1-0 and Georgia began to push in the final 10 minutes. A through ball left Kobiashvili totally unmarked and running towards goal, but Buffon came tearing out of his area to slide on to the ball and clear the danger.

Moments later Italy stroked the ball around well with Camoranesi setting up Iaquinta for a turn and angled drive smothered by Loria.

Kenia went on a solo run past two defenders and blasted a left-foot finish into the arms of Buffon. Cannavaro's sliding tackle stopped Kobiashvili as he prepared to run into the box, as the Azzurri visibly ran out of steam.

However, they still had enough to secure the victory in the final minute. Del Piero guided a through ball towards De Rossi running round the defence and the Roma starlet did not hesitate to place an angled right-foot drive into the far bottom corner. It was his first ever brace in an Italy jersey.

Italy: Buffon; Zambrotta, Cannavaro, Legrottaglie, Dossena; Pirlo (Palombo 46), De Rossi, Aquilani; Camoranesi, Toni (Iaquinta 70), Di Natale (Del Piero 56)

Georgia: Loria; Lobjanidze, Salukvadze, Kaladze, Eliava (Kvaskvhvadze 46); Kenia, Khmaladze, Kobiashvili, Menteshashvili (Odikadze 68); Iashvili, Mchelidze (Siradze 54)

Chiellini sets aim on Zenit game

«Luckily I feel better and better and I’ve been able to train with the squad in the last week. Clearly I still feel a bit of pain and I know I’ll have to live with it for another month or so, but we’re at a good point on the road to recovery». Giorgio Chiellini confirms the positive feelings already evident by following his training sessions.

The recovery is going really well and it will soon be possible to see him on the pitch again.
«As for my comeback, it’ll be up to the Manager to decide the best time, considering my athletic condition too, because if one player is not right the whole team suffers. I’m really eager to play and I hope I can do so against Zenit».

Buffon rushes to Italy's rescue

Gianluigi Buffon was Man of the Match in Cyprus, though he explains “that is what a goalkeeper is for.”

The shot-stopper kept out several great chances so that Italy could snatch a barely-deserved 2-1 win in stoppages.

“Of course you expect Italy to come to Cyprus and win fairly comfortably, so this is really not what we expected,” said the Juventus star.

“In these situations every element has to be taken into account. It was clear that Cyprus had an extra gear in physical terms, which got worse when we lost two players in the opening 15 minutes to injury.”

The Azzurri fielded an all-attack formation with Mauro Camoranesi, Antonio Di Natale, Luca Toni and Alberto Gilardino together, but found themselves hopelessly unbalanced.

“It was certainly surprising with the way we were set out that Cyprus did not focus on defence. They wanted to take it to us and created real problems by spreading out wide and out-numbering us.

“We made mistakes too by missing easy passes, so that increased the Cypriot confidence and made it even more difficult.”

In the first half, in particular, the home team tested Buffon repeatedly.

“The start was such a chaotic run of shots that I can't remember which save was toughest! This is what a goalkeeper is for, though, to be ready when the others are struggling physically.

“Their job usually is to work hard to ensure I don't have to do much, so it is only right that sometimes I get them out of trouble.

“At the end of the day you can play with three strikers, but it depends on how fit and sharp they are, as they have to come back and help out in midfield.

“The Coach saw at half-time that Cyprus were constantly crowding us out and taking the numerical advantage, so he introduced Gennaro Gattuso to balance things out a bit.”

Buffon also commented on the transfer rumour that Manchester City are preparing a £60m bid.

“I like football, not fantasy football, so that story doesn't even deserve a comment.”

Lippi: We were so lucky!

Marcello Lippi could not deny that Italy were extremely lucky to beat Cyprus, but pointed out injuries meant his game plan changed radically.

“There is no doubt we picked up more than we deserved tonight,” he said after a 2-1 victory in Larnaca.

Antonio Di Natale's brace sealed it, but defenders Alessandro Gamberini and Fabio Grosso went off almost immediately.

Lippi had only one second half substitution and chose to replace Luca Toni with Gennaro Gattuso, pushing Di Natale further up the field.

“It started so badly, as we prepared to take risks here and knew that would give Cyprus more space, but I intended to change later on.

“That was made impossible by seeing two injuries in the opening 15 minutes. I had to risk it and re-balance the squad with Gattuso.

“That was unplanned and so we had to make do with what we had at the time. I knew this many strikers would cause problems for the opposition, but also for us in the long run.”

It is a stuttering start for the Azzurri on the road to South Africa in 2010, but they lead the group along with the Republic of Ireland, who also won 2-1 against Georgia.

“There are no teams that just lie down and die anymore, especially if you are in the same physical condition as we are right now. We were lucky and we take that luck!”

Italy welcome Georgia to the Stadio Friuli on Wednesday night.

Cyprus 1 - 2 Italy

Di Natale 7, 92 (I), Aloneftis 27 (C)
Larnaca

Italy were extremely fortunate to grab a 2-1 win in Cyprus with Antonio Di Natale completing his brace in stoppages. It was a dismal performance and the Cypriots probably deserved more than a mere point, let alone this defeat.

Marcello Lippi's second Azzurri stint officially kicked off in Cyprus with the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign. Fabio Cannavaro also returned for the first game since a devastating ankle injury on the eve of Euro 2008, joined in central defence by Alessandro Gamberini for the sidelined Giorgio Chiellini. As Alessandro Del Piero was suffering from a thigh problem, Luca Toni and Alberto Gilardino forged a new partnership in a very attacking formation. They hadn't lined up together since the World Cup against Australia.

It was also an historic occasion, as for the first time Italy wore the World Cup winners' badge on their all-white shirts. Curiously, in the previous six meetings the Azzurri only failed to win once, a 1-1 draw by Enzo Bearzot's World Cup holders in 1983.

In a disastrous start, Gamberini fell awkwardly just 60 seconds into the game and damaged his shoulder, making way for Andrea Barzagli.

Cyprus certainly didn't sit back, as moments later Gianluigi Buffon needed a great reaction save to palm away Aloneftis' header at the back post from the dangerous Nikolau cross.

Makridis ran at Barzagli and had penalty appeals for a risky challenge from the Wolfsburg player. From the resulting corner on six minutes, Buffon was again called into a desperate save on Kostantinou from five yards!

Fortunately for the Azzurri, they broke the deadlock with their first chance against the run of play. Antonio Di Natale did it all by himself, running at the defence and taking advantage of the extra space to smash a low right-foot strike between the goalkeeper and the near post. The defenders backed off the Udinese striker and were made to pay for it.

Cyprus remained extremely aggressive and were very unlucky not to equalise almost immediately. Barzagli's horrid mistake left Okkas through and Buffon came tearing out to close it down, the ball fell to Kostantinou to bring a goalline clearance out of Cannavaro and in the final attempt Aloneftis ballooned over.

It was a wide open and entertaining match in Larnaca. Camoranesi chopped the pass over the defence to combine with Andrea Pirlo, but the Milanista only scuffed the shot which skimmed the near post.

Fabio Grosso also got a knock to his back when he fell badly during a corner and was forced off the pitch to make way for Roma's Marco Cassetti. In the opening 18 minutes, Italy lost two of their first choice defenders.

Gilardino stung the palms of Gheorgollidis with a fierce right-foot effort after exchanging passes with Toni, then Camoranesi tested the goalkeeper. Aloneftis was not far off target with a spectacular overhead kick.

Cyprus earned a thoroughly deserved equaliser on the half-hour mark. Buffon had once again been able to deny a Charlambides close-range finish, but could do nothing when Cassetti was caught napping on the loose ball by Aloneftis. The Roma defender's hesitation was disastrous.

Okkas fired a snapshot over from 25 metres, while Pirlo's free kick was off target and Toni was inches away from getting his head to a Camoranesi cross.

In the final minute of the first half, Italy went very close with Cassetti's volley beaten away at the near post by Gheorgollidis' knee from a Di Natale assist. However, at the other end Cannavaro's error almost proved very costly indeed as he was attacked by Kostantinou. The half ended with the fifth Cypriot corner.

Lippi realised his team was hopelessly unbalanced and used his final substitution to introduce midfield warrior Gennaro Gattuso for the ineffective Toni, pushing Di Natale further up the field. After five minutes Di Natale went round the goalkeeper and hit the back of the net, but he was correctly flagged just offside.

Di Natale went on the counter and curled past the far post when he should perhaps have provided a cross to Gilardino. Gianluca Zambrotta created a chance Gilardino had deflected out for a corner.

The Azzurri had two great chances in quick succession. A deflection sent Gilardino clear through the centre and he fired at Gheorgollidis, then as the move continued Daniele De Rossi's lob was inches off target.

Moments later the Cypriot goalkeeper parried a blistering Pirlo free kick into the path of Barzagli, who didn't get enough power to it from six yards and allowed a goalline clearance!

De Rossi unleashed another powerful effort from distance that stung Gheorgollidis' palms, from the resulting corner Gilardino nodded wide.

Cyprus very nearly took the lead on 74 minutes, as substitute Christofi burst between Cannavaro and Barzagli with a remarkable change of pace, but Buffon did just enough to narrow the angle and force him to flash a shot across the face of goal.

Barzagli charged down a Makridis snapshot, while Charalambous volleyed a corner just past the upright with Buffon rooted to the spot.

Gilardino nodded Camoranesi's corner over, but with four minutes to go Aloneftis went on the counter against Cannavaro and his finish was palmed out by Buffon. From the corner the entire stadium jumped, as Charalambous prodded inches wide from six yards!

Once again, Italy had an incredible stroke of luck to win the game in stoppages. Gilardino flicked on a long ball with his heel for Camoranesi, who dummied a shot and instead chipped the pass to the unmarked Di Natale for an angled volley!

Cyprus: Gheorgollidis; Nikolau, Charalambous, Christou, Garposiz, Makridis, Charalambides, Michail (Yiasouni 72), Aloneftis, Okkas (Pavlou 73), M Kostantinou (Christofi 63)

Italy: Buffon; Zambrotta, Gamberini (Barzagli 4), Cannavaro, Grosso (Cassetti 18); Camoranesi, Pirlo, De Rossi, Di Natale; Toni (Gattuso 46), Gilardino

Chiellini making giant steps towards recovery

Juventus held an intense training session this morning, even if still at reduced ranks due to the internationals' absence. With Ranieri still in Nyon attending the Club Elite forum, the session was supervised again by Damiano today. After the usual warm-up with the ball, the squad played a training match in which Chiellini, Marchionni, Trezeguet and Zanetti all took part. The latter three also scored, under the watchful eye of Jean-Claude Blanc, who was at training on the sidelines alongside Team Manager Gianluca Pessotto.
After the training match, Marchionni, Zanetti and Youth Team player Esposito worked separately with Andrea Scanavino, while both Trezeguet and Chiellini continued training with the squad. Zebina had a phsyiotherapy session and worked in the gym too.

Trezeguet and Marchionni back in squad

The Bianconeri trained in the morning today, supervised by assistant coach Damiano, because Ranieri had to travel to Nyon to attend the Club Elite Manager Forum, alongside the crème de la crème of European football, including Ferguson, Wenger, Guardiola, Advocaat, Scolari and Klinsmann. The Managers talked about where modern football is headed and its current problems.

Meanwhile the squad, still without the internationals, trained as usual in Vinovo. The injured players are quickly recovering their form; Trezeguet and Marchionni even worked with the squad and took part in the training match too.
The only injured player who wasn't able to work on the pitch today was Jonathan Zebina, who is still feeling pain to his tendon.

Blatter hands over World Cup!

Canna: We are the champions

Fabio Cannavaro has warned the Azzurri “we have to prove why we are the world champions” as the qualifying campaign approaches.

The captain has regained his leadership role after missing Euro 2008 with a devastating ankle injury, returning for the upcoming tests with Cyprus and Georgia.

“We have to qualify for this important objective of 2010 in South Africa. We are the world champions and must prove it,” said the defender.

“The motivation is certainly there, but from now on it will all be more difficult.”

Italy will become the first nation to wear a badge on their shirts during qualifying to represent their status as the reigning World Cup holders.

It was presented to Cannavaro during a ceremony on Tuesday by FIFA President Sepp Blatter and this week Italy also climbed to number two in the FIFA world rankings.

“I think Roberto Donadoni did a good job at Euro 2008 and my injury did not affect our progress,” assured Cannavaro.

“Don’t forget we went out to eventual winners Spain, so that is some consolation. Let us remember that we showed positive things at the European Championship too and must begin again from those aspects.”

Marcello Lippi’s Azzurri travel to Cyprus on Saturday evening and then welcome Georgia to the Stadio Friuli in Udine on September 10.

Cannavaro is possibly the most famous Neapolitan in the world and was asked for his opinion on the incidents that prompted a season-long ban on travelling Napoli supporters.

“It’s not just a problem in Naples and I am always proud to be from that city, but unfortunately bad things happen everywhere.

“What we should be ashamed of is the system that does not resolve the issues behind violence. We need to ensure the rules are respected.”

Italy rise in FIFA rankings

World Champions Italy climbed back into second place in the FIFA world rankings behind Euro 2008 winners Spain.

The Azzurri had slipped behind Germany last month, but overtook them by just 10 points.

There are no changes this time around from fourth place to ninth, which are still held by Holland, Croatia, Brazil, Argentina, the Czech Republic and Portugal.

Turkey were a revelation at Euro 2008 and leap into the top 10, making an advance of three positions.

However, semi-finalists Russia slide to 12th and Fabio Capello’s England tumbled to 15th, overtaken by Cameroon.

The Republic of Ireland, managed by Giovanni Trapattoni, sit in 38th place.

FIFA will release the next rankings on October 8.

1 Spain, 1,565 points
2 Italy, 1,339
3 Germany, 1,329
4 Holland, 1,295
5 Croatia, 1,266
6 Brazil, 1,252
7 Argentina, 1,230
8 Czech Republic, 1,134
9 Portugal, 1,120
10 Turkey, 1,033

Paolucci enjoys Azzurrini chance

Catania's Juventus-owned striker Michele Paolucci is relishing the chance to wear the Azzurrini shirt after his late call-up to Pierluigi Casiraghi's squad.

Casiraghi turned to the talented 22-year-old, who has been watched by Manchester United scouts, when Cagliari hitman Robert Acquafresca was ruled out of the upcoming European Championship qualifiers.

Italy's Under-21 side take on Greece in Castel Di Sangro on September 5 before travelling to Croatia on September 9.

“I am obviously very happy to be able to undertake this adventure with the national side,” Paolucci beamed.

“I am already used to the atmosphere because I grew up with a lot of the lads in the set-up.

“I sincerely want to share my satisfaction with the club because I wouldn't have had this opportunity if they hadn't given me a chance to show my talents.

“At the moment I feel like I am enjoying the fruits of the labour of many.”

A win over Greece would secure qualification for the European Championships as the Azzurrini currently lead Group 1 with 22 points from Croatia in second with 18

Legrottaglie: «We won't suffer against anyone»

Nicola Legrottaglie has enjoyed plenty of success in the last year: he earned back a place on the team, becoming a reliable first-team regular, and also got back in the National team. His ambitions don't stop here, though: «Juventus will never suffer against anyone, in fact the other teams will suffer when they face us because we'll be hard to beat. We're tough cookies and Inter Milan will soon realize it!», the "Duke" said today in Coverciano, at Italy's training camp. «Juventus – he continued - will surprise people in the Champions League too, especially if we go through the first group and we get to the knock-out stage".

Gai not forgotten

On September 3rd 1989, during a scouting trip to Poland to take a look at his Juventus' upcoming UEFA Cup opponents, Gaetano Scirea died in a terrible car accident; he was only thirty-six at the time.
Nineteen years have gone by since then, but his memory lives on more than ever, not only among the Juventini, but among all other football fans too, regardless of the team they support.

As a footballer, Scirea won every possible honour: the World Cup, 7 League titles, 2 Italian Cups, 1 European Cup, 1 Cup Winners' Cup, 1 UEFA Cup, 1 European Super Cup and 1 Europe/South America Cup. First and foremost, though, apart from being a great footballer, Scirea was a gentleman and a sportsman with no equals. Suffice to say that in his entire career, playing as skipper behind the defence, he never got one single red card.
Everyone at Juventus and all the fans affectionately join his widow Mariella and his son Riccardo in mourning the memory of the unforgettable Gai.

Youth team reach De Cecco semi-final

Juve’s Youth Team will have to wait over a month to play their first League fixture, but in the meantime they're “warming up their motors” at the fifth edition of the De Cecco Tournament. Maddaloni's boys overcame Roma in the second game in Pescara, with a clear 3-0 win, earning access to the semi-finals. Two goals were scored by Immobile and one by Daud.

Now the Bianconeri will wait for the last matches to be played and then the draw will establish when and against whom Juventus will be playing for a place in the final, to chase their second consecutive De Cecco Trophy. Indeed the Bianconeri won the fourth edition last year, beating Empoli in the final.

Gilardino ruins Nedved's party

Just like last year. Juventus played an excellent match on a difficult ground like the Franchi, they controlled Fiorentina for large parts of the game, scored in the first half (goal by Nedved) and were caught up at the end, with the Viola down to ten men.
It could've been a deserved birthday party for Pavel Nedved (he turned 36 yesterday), who scored a goal set up by a great run by his fellow countryman Grygera. There were a couple of wasted chances to get the second (especially near the end of the first half) and then, after Felipe Melo's sending off, Gilardino invented the equalizer which is a bit of a bitter joke for Juve. But in any case it's a good point, especially taking into consideration the other big teams' results today: Inter Milan and Roma drew, and AC Milan lost. Now it’s the national teams’ turn to play, and after the break Udinese, one of the starring teams of Day 1, will arrive in Turin.
The match. With no Trezeguet (as well as no Zanetti, Marchionni, Zebina and Chiellini), Ranieri opted for Amauri up front with Del Piero. At the back he confirmed Grygera, Mellberg, Legrottaglie and Molinaro. He gave a chance to Marchisio in midfield, playing him next to Poulsen, with Camoranesi and Nedved wide. Fiorentina played former Juve player Almiron, behind the three strikers Santana-Gilardino-Osvaldo.
The home crowd, who wait for this game all year, spurred on their team from the start, and the Viola started well, but Buffon only had a couple of long-range efforts to keep under control. The Bianconeri were more dangerous, like in the 8th minute when Amauri controlled the ball well but was anticipated by Frey. Both teams played a good passing game, but the keepers were rarely called into action. The turning point came after 39 minutes. An all-Czech play with Grygera devastating on the right giving Nedved his nicest birthday gift, a pass in front of goal, easy for Pavel to tap in from a few yards. Before the break, there were further chances to make it two, first with Amauri (a header) and then Del Piero (in front of Frey), but to no avail.
In the second half, Prandelli put on Jovotic and Pazzini and the Viola tried to increase the pace, labouring to put balls in from the wings, but Mellberg and Legrottaglie were flawless in the middle. The hosts also tried with free kicks from outside the area, but there were no risks for Buffon until the 72nd minute, when Gilardino went past the Swede but shot wide. Ranieri then made his first substitution, replacing Molinaro with De Ceglie. Fiorentina replied by putting on Kuzmanovic for Donadel. With time, Juventus took charge of the game again, taking advantage of the hosts being tired as well as Felipe Melo being sent off for his second booking. Ranieri took out Camoranesi and sent on Iaquinta, but he barely had time to come on the pitch before Fiorentina got the draw, thanks to Gilardino, who did well twisting and turning in the box.
Juve couldn't stand being punished near the end again just like last year, and Amauri forced a great save out of Frey. But the score didn't change any further.

It ended 1-1, a score that's a little harsh for Juventus, but in any case is useful in putting a point away and, seeing how tough today's opponents were, it sends a clear signal to all their rivals.

Juve players leave Franchi full of regrets

A common feeling among the Bianconeri as they left the Stadium in Florence: everyone has the impression of having lost two points instead of earning one. Gilardino's equalizer, coming right at the end, left a bitter taste in everybody's mouth. Here are the comments from some of the stars of the match.

Pavel Nedved: «We should've finished them off and gone 2-0 up. In any case, I liked how the team handled a very tough game, showing no fear and with a great spirit».

Gigi Buffon: «We were tasting victory already, but in the last year and a half we've come to understand that you always have to wait before celebrating when Fiorentina are involved. We have to give credit to the Viola, they never give up, but with one man more than them the game looked over. The goal we conceded? Lately I've been letting in some beautiful goals».

Nicola Legrottaglie: «Before the game we would have settled for a result like this, but now we almost feel like we lost. It's a shame, because they'd created so little and also because we never concede goals like that. Let's forget all this and focus on the next game».

Ranieri: «This is a disappointing draw»

It's a different season, but the feelings coming out of the Artemio Franchi are the same as last year. Juve did well and would've deserved a win, but in the end only gained one point. Last year it was a Mutu penalty, this time a personal effort by Gilardino. Claudio Ranieri has something to recriminate about yet again.

These were the Manager's remarks after the match: «We accept the draw but it's disappointing for us. We'd controlled the game and had chances to finish it off with Amauri and Del Piero. Shame about that goal we conceded, an experienced team such as ours can't concede a goal like that, even if Gilardino did well with one of his typical moves. At the end we tried to win it instead of slowing the pace down. In any case I'm pleased with how the lads played and for how they interpreted the game play. I liked the new signings, they showed they've settled in immediately, that's another reason I'm happy about the work we've done so far».

Italy's Manager Marcello Lippi has called up five Juventus players again for the two upcoming World Cup qualifiers. Gianluigi Buffon, Nicola Legrottaglie, Mauro German Camoranesi, Vincenzo Iaquinta and Alessandro Del Piero were named in the squad for the games against Cyprus and Georgia, just like they were for the recent friendly against Austria.

The five Azzurri won't be the only players missing in Vinovo in the next ten days. Claudio Ranieri will also have to do without Italian Under 21s Paolo De Ceglie, Sebastian Giovinco and Claudio Marchisio, as well as the Austrian keeper Alex Manninger, Zdenek Grygera, called up by the Czech Republic, Swedes Olof Mellberg (called up by the first team) and Albin Ekdal (Under 21), Christian Poulsen (Denmark), Dario Knezevic (Croatia), and Momo Sissoko (Mali); all these players will be away right up to the days just before the game against Udinese on Sunday September 14th.
